Weird, but delicious, vegan food

Andrew and I have decided to go vegan for the Lenten season. Navigating through meals this first week was fun and interesting. We’ve definitely had to think more about what we’re preparing. In general, I tend to like meat substitutes but prefer to eat meals more heavy on the vegetables (rather than soy protein, wheat gluten, etc.).

Inspired by Pro Bono Baker’s post for miso coleslaw and My Vegetable Blog’s buffalo wing sushi, we put together a meal of buffalo tofu, zucchini and carrot miso salad and some mixed greens.

Simple Breads

Simple does not equal fast and easy.

The meditative process of bread-baking is simple, but the amount of time and care it takes to churn out a lovely loaf is neither easy nor fast. I still lack the sense of intuition true bakers possess, but the calming and centering qualities of the process are not lost on me.

I made two different breads this Sunday, both from Nigella Lawson’s How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Norwegian Mountain Loaf and Garlic and Parsley Hearth Bread. The former was a quick bread, in which I stirred the ingredients together and baked. The other involved kneading and rising.

On not being old and antisocial

Being a late-twentysomething is a lot different than being an early twentysomething. For one thing, I don’t find myself in social situations with people I don’t know that often. As a result, I often end up blurting out whatever crosses my mind. A few years ago those blurts would prompt witty conversations and fun would be had by all. Now more often than not, those blurts only prompt blank stares and awkward social situations. That’s where this post can come in handy- sure it’s written mostly for businesspeople trying to climb the social ladder, but I think I can apply some of these principles in my own social life.
